Your Guide to Becoming an Actor: Learn from the Greats

I believe it is a must to watch performances by accomplished actors, both on stage and screen. Paying attention to their acting choices, body language, and emotional depth. Learning from the best can be incredibly insightful and is essential for any actor who wants to build a meaningful, lasting career.

Your journey in this industry will be unique but having a rough blue print/outline can give you insight into what may come. The next time you look up somone on IMDb, pay attention to their trajectory. How many one line roles did they have? How many episodes of TV were they on before they were in multiple episodes of the same show?

More than that, exploring the careers of past actors provides lessons in resilience. The entertainment industry is challenging, and learning how icons navigated obstacles—whether handling rejection, reinventing themselves, or adapting to new roles—can be profoundly inspiring. Understanding that even the greats faced setbacks and kept going can motivate today’s actors to persevere through their own challenges.

The art of acting has evolved over centuries, and every generation brings its own style, technique, and approach. Merle Streep, Regina King, and Florence Pugh don't have the some training but they are all wonderfully talented. By studying the work of those who came before, actors gain invaluable insight into not only technique but also the emotional depth and dedication that the craft demands. I highly advocate for watching things like Actors on Actors and The Hollywood Reporter Rountable. It's eye-opening to see actors at a high point in their career discuss highs and lows with their peers.
